Governance in the community

It's a funny old word 'governance'. For me governance conjures up images of old men making serious faces as they make serious decisions about serious matters. But in Governance for the not for profit sector, this is not the case. I myself have sat on a number of community boards and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Either as a board member of the local Domestic Violence Action Centre or Aboriginal Social Housing, I have found that that it's a worthwhile role that has it's challenges that are easily outweighed by the rewards. And until recently I didn't really ask my self 'why' do I spend some of my precious spree time meeting with fellow board members at least once a month, help out at clean up days and fund raising events, get involved with recruitment and development for staff; and souring the internet reading and researching so that I have some idea of what I'm actually talking about. But after spending some time with the Galambila Aboriginal Helth Service board of directors, I soon recalled why myself and thousands of other people choose to be a board member. There's something very fulfilling about playing such an important part in the development and future of your community.

If you're a board member out there who despite all the demands of every day life, decide to get in and lend a hand for their community, I commend you. You are local heroes that will probably receive no accolades or ticker tape parades but you have my respect.

Elders Voices

Having the opportunity to travel the country and be involved with great people doing great work is a privilege but also a responsibly. This was highlighted for me when working on a project about Aboriginal Female Entrepreneurs and I had the opportunity to meet Veronica Williams. Veronica is a successful business woman with life learnt wisdom. Leading up to the interview I mentioned that it was a privilege to meet all the women within this project and get to record a small part of their story. Veronica thanked me but also added that it was also a responsibility, a responsibly to tell their stories appropriately and truthfully.  I never forgot these words and ensure that my attitude to story telling is that it is a privilege and responsibility that I take seriously.
But our Elders are clever like that. Their wisdom is not only the knowledge they've accumulated over the years but how the share this knowledge so that it has the most impact. I recall one respected Elder from my home town of Rockhampton who had this amazing insight into "The Simpsons".

You're probably asking what observation would an Elder make on the most popular animation series ever? Well, what this Elder noticed was that at the start of every episode the Simpsons are a family, and at the end of every episode the Simpsons are still a family. Despite all the dysfunction, crisis and awful behaviour from family members, they forgive each other and remain a family. "And that is why people love The Simpsons" this Elder said "everyone wants to be loved and belong to a family despite what happens, they're part of a family". I found this so profound, and now I'm fan of the Simpsons.
I'd like to share with you another important message from Elder, Larry Kelly. I met Uncle Larry as part of the Smoke Free Community coordinated by the lead organisation Galambila Aboriginal Medical Service. Like all my lessons learnt from our Elders, this message wise life changing, and I hope you find it as profound as I did Uncle Larry Kelly

Giving Our Children a Future

As a parent and grandparent you quickly learn that the children you bring into this world have to have a strong self belief and aspirations for the future. Luckily I am in a position to provide emotionally and financially for my family, but at times you do consider if you have done enough?
Being Aboriginal my family ties are strong and is my power base. I have grown up to belief that you need your family more then you need money and material gains. So when I felt I needed a hand as a father, I approached family and they were always there for me, and when I'm talking family I'm talking 'big mob' of family, the extended family.
The world moves on very quickly and with progression comes changes, but some things never change. And one of those is for our children to have a strong self belief and aspirations for the future. This changing world has become more richer, diverse and complicated with influences on our children much more then I can imagine when I was a child.
To prepare our children for the future, we need more then our own resources and our families. To give our children the best opportunity in life is to reach out to services within our community, significantly Early Childhood Centers that are safe and rich with experiences for young people.
I have a close working relationship with one if these centres, the Kambu Children and Family Center where children are received into a culturally safe and caring centre where children feel they are part of a bigger family, where the statement "Together - We make a family" is true.
Here is a series of vignettes on the programs this important service provides to our community. Kambu Children and Family Center Video

Female Entrepreneurs

A recent report by the Australia Network recently highlighted that Women Entrepreneurs are on the rise. According to  the report in the 2013-2014 period, females participating in business rose from 19 percent to 24 percent. Women Entrepreneurs on the Rise, Says Survey

A sharp increase but I feel we are still lacking in the full value that women bring to the economy. Having been greatly influenced by women in my personal and professional late, I can vouch for the value and quality of skills, experience and characteristics women bring to business.

I was lucky to be given the opportunity to meet and interview five amazing women who were making great in-roads for Aboriginal Female Entrepreneurs. This five ladies epitomise creativity, strength, resilience and leadership each in their own way. I hope you enjoy hearing more about these ladies in the short video 'Born From Fire".

You might have driven through COFFS, BELLINGEN, NAMBUCCA HEADS or anywhere else on the mid north coast, stopped for a coffee then kept on going.  Seriously..next time .. stop for a while and check out this beautiful part of the world. We were lucky enough to explore the whole area on our smoke free community campaign and found ourselves @ UNCLE LARRYS place getting a traditional welcome and an impromptu smoking.  Its so great to be welcomed to country properly. Everything we did from then on seemed  appropriate  and energised. We ended up feeling so inspired we did a short piece using Uncle Larry's powerful words and philosophies. Thanks for the welcome. And the love.

THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE BEFORE THERE WAS AN ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. GRAHAM getting some help to chuck the smokes!

Jetzak hits the coast of Mid-Northern NSW! Look out for our new TV spots, online stories, Billboards and all the rest! Smoke Free Community campaign is live and here’s some insight into how we tackled this one…
We’ve been cruising the east coast, surfing, filming, playing sports, hanging out with great people - and all in the name of a Smoke Free Community! The local Aboriginal Medical Service's here are doing a great job getting on track to keep the messaging and community support strong. Healthy mind , spirit and body is the future ! Working with GALAMBILA AMS was great and gave us a real insight into the local community. From the outset we knew the only way to make this campaign a success would be to engage the community, really engage them - and boy do we know how to engage! Getting to know the community was the most important part of this campaign.
We had the chance to work with some incredible locals based in Mid North NSW and we had the pleasure of doing it in such a beautiful part of this country. Respects to the Gumbaynggirr people for having us on this beautiful part of Australia. We felt so welcome and even got smoked by elder Uncle Larry.
Typically the Executive Producer on a big campaign like this remains in the office whilst the production crew have all the fun in the field, but at Jetzak we’re a bit different. As the Executive Producer at Jetzak I prefer to be involved from inception through to the final stage of content delivery. We choose to work in this way which is great because we love shooting just as much as we enjoy working with clients on strategic communications - and this campaign had it all! We have the production and post-production capabilities and we work with clients to strategically maximise audiences online, through commercial networks and through various social media avenues. That’s why our campaigns have integrity - because we’re in it every step of the way & we love what we do!
The ‘Smoke Free Community’ campaign was a huge job but at the end of the day what it boiled down to was positivity! It’s just about saying ‘hey - why don’t we make quitting smoking a positive thing? Let’s just see what life’s like when you’re not addicted to the smokes.’ Sending a positive message has been the key to this campaign’s success!
We’ve had such a positive response to our ‘Smoke Free Community’ campaign i
We want to thank every one of the deadly people who shared their stories with us!
Watch their stories here http://smokefreecommunity.com.au/category/smokefree-tv/ and check out the rest of the site and get onto their facebook page and like like like!!  https://www.facebook.com/healthylifeNSW?ref=bookmarks

Thanks for having us you mob! Until next time!
